carfax is a good tool, but you have to be careful with it.

A clean carfax is a good starting point, and a nice hurdle to clear. Both for buying the car now, and selling it later down the road. If you later have to sell a car with a "dirty" carfax, that's a pain and will limit your market. So definately run the carfax so you know what's there.

But don't rely on it too much. If it's clean, it doesn't mean the car hasn't been flooded, mileage messed with, crashed, etc. etc. Lots of stuff can happen to a car without the info being necessarily entered into a database somewhere. If it's not in a database that carfax searches, it of course won't show up.
