While it may be true that people do not "comparison shop" a Porsche against a Hyundai, there are a lot of looky-loos who just like to daydream. A salesman has to sell cars to earn his commission - and helping some vagrant with his automotive wetdream doesn't pay the bills.

Besides, this thread seems really contradictory here... people in one thread saying they shouldn't be judged by what they wear to the high end car dealerships, while in other threads saying "look at me, look at me - i have brand x pocket knife, brand y watch, and the latest kitchen gizmo"
Very true. I have no problem with a salesman wanting to ascertain if I can afford to buy but I DEMAND good manners from him and more than the slick script prepared by the corporate BMW dealership.

A clever salesman should recognise my brand x pocket knife and brand Y watch dangling from my ears, not to mention the latest kitchen gizmo I wear around my neck
