The engine on my 944S caught fire on a test drive after I did some fuel work in April of 2005. (Search the 944 forum for pictures and the full story. Suffice to say there was little I could have done to prevent it except to have had a fire extinguisher in the car.)

I was very much in the same position as you, and expecting a fight. State Farm offered $6,500 for my 'S', which I had paid around $4,500 for less than a year earlier. (I had put much more than $2,000 into it in repairs--but we all know that doesn't really help the valuation of a car that much.) Suffice to say, I was very happy with the offer and immediately disarmed.

My opinion is SF is a little more expensive than other insurers, but you get a few less hassles for your money. What it really comes down to is the specific adjuster who handles your claim--you could always get a real d*ck. Let's hope it all goes smoothly for you.

As for Red Book, never heard of it. If it's a subscription service, maybe someone in an auto-related industry here can help. I've had to do some valuations in the last few years (bought a few used cars, donated one to charity) and have used multiple sources like Kelley and Edmunds.com. I've found them to generally be within 5% of each other. If the numbers from Kelley look good to you, I wouldn't expect any big surprises.
