Yes, part of the mounting process is you need to pull out on the fenders while lining everything up. As you seem to have found out, you kind of have to do this to help line things up.
BTW...good idea about using a metal stip across the back under the reflector. I don't actually have screws back there but if I did I could see where you'd want to use a metal backing plate to help distribute the pressure.
