Most photoediting software (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro, etc...) has something called "curves" which is usually used along with "levels". The curves tool usually looks like this

With the top picture type, you can adjust it to have a slight "S" shape which does an excellent job of adjusting contrast.
USM is a feature in Photoshop, unsharp mask. It does a great job of sharpening. I don't use it too much on my moon shots because it tends to add noise to the moon. I'm still pretty novice at using Photoshop to process my digital stuff.
