when i had that job title, i knew i was basically the lowest on the totem pole. in civil eng, you basically do the crap work that involves some type of shoveling of samples. well, for the past two summers we had to babysit this one kid in college. this guy was a jackass. you ask him to do something, and he would do it halfarse, or not at all. i asked him what he wanted to do after college, and he responded with, "anything else besides this schitty job." (he didnt realize it was a slam to us) well, the second summer, we gave him more math stuff. stuff like figuring out how much cut and fill we would need. the idiot would give me the answer written on a post it. no backup calcs. he ask a question, and you tell him the answer and he would say, "oh yea, i knew that.". well, we reviewed his job performance accordingly. six of us on the team painted a very clear picture of this kid....turns out that his uncle knows my boss, he will be #7 on our team next week. he got hired (on a consultant basis). on the bright side, i will never have to do any of the dirty work again. he walks thru the door i am handing him a shovel and all the nightwork.
