I build a Thompson/Center .50 Cal Hawken many years ago. The stock was fully inletted but just roughly machine finished. Spent many hours with rasps to shape it then many more sanding. The barrel was again rough machine finished and required a lot of draw filing to smooth it enough to brown it. All brass was right out of the mold, again a lot of filing to fit then polishing.

Gun turned out great is a lot of fun to shoot but I spent many many hours working on it.

Also build a .45 cal flintlock pistol. Just lightly sanded the stock before finishing, browned the barrel, polished the brass and it was done. Probably didn't spend 4 hours total on it..

Kits used to be all over the place as to the level of work required to finish them.
