The AC-130 is actually the single most precise weapons system in the USAF, and the most persistant too. The latest, the AC-130U, is lightyears better than the models the US used in Nam.
I think they're fantastic platforms when the environment is permissible, and they are most definitely utterly awe inspiring to see in action.
They're upgrading 'em all now with Mk144 30x173mm guns (to replace all the 40mm and 25mm mounts). That's the same caliber as the gun of the A-10. Very, very powerful round.
Definitely want to keep them away from high threat levels though.
