I think Apple, like MSFT, sees an opportunity in the convergence now going on. And true to their philosophy, they are going after the entertainment oriented users versus MSFT wanting to take on Blackberry and the business users.
This is a really cool device, especially the size. And the screen resolution has upped the ante over 240x320 that is native for Pocket PC’s and Smartphones. And 4-8 Gb of storage is also a breakthrough.
But there are some issues. For example a keyboard without keys will make touch dialing difficult and typing an exercise in patience. A touch screen without a stylist will make for lots of smudges and fingerprints on the screen. No 3G means you better be near a hotspot or wait forever for all that cool media to download. Email access via POP3 or IMAP is a turn-off for me since I have been using push technology for 2 years now.
There are two big unknowns. First, how will it function as a phone? There are a lot of cell phones out there from cell phone makers that simply suck, so it is not a given that this one will be great, or even good. Second unknown is battery life. There is a ton of good stuff in there but all of it needs power.
Clearly there are people that will buy it simply because it is made by Apple, Inc. (new name, btw). On the other hand, another group will be put off by the high price. IMHO, it is way to early to predict how this will do until there is field experience.
