Agreed, 3g is required for the Euro market. I wonder if the lack of a Euro model (initially) may have a bit to do with the strict materials restrictions that hardware manufacturers (RoHS) must comply with in Europe.
Several electronics manufaturers pulled some of their existing product lines from the euro market after the July 06 implementation of RoHS.
