Grady,
My wife just took a call from her teacher and our daughter is one of the top three and will be going on to the regional finals.

She couldn't or won't tell us if she was 1, 2 or 3 because they will announce it at an upcoming student assembly. So they want it to be a surprize for her and us.
Her teacher said the judges were impressed by her knowledge of the proceedure, her personal interest in the subject and the presentation of the data.
As for as the amount of time to conduct and complete it all, we've actually known since school started that she would be doing a project this year. Her school alternates years so she won't be doing one next year, but will be the year after. The clock really started ticking on Sept. 26, which was the first meeting with the parents/kids/teachers. We were given a handout which explained what was required and expected of the kids and the role of the parents. We turned them in on Jan 5th.
When we move up to the regionals, we will be allowed to revamp the board. We will probably change the graph from a x/y line graph to a bar chart. This was suggested by the teacher. I suppose we could weigh the balls but it wouldn't be accurate as the helium ball has leaked several psi. Also the judges were impressed by the "release device". I was kinda of proud of that one myself.
