You do not get a second chance to not look like a out of place dweeb.
One can certainly dress well w/o a tie. Mfg/egr environments generally aren't fashoin centers, if ya know what I mean.
In general, it's good if you can dress
just a bit nicer than those you will be interviewing with. The goal is to make a comfortable (good fit) impression. YMMV
