Even the most meticulous of authors messes up sometimes. Thomas Pynchon, generally regarded as the most encyclopedic, detailed, prepared novelist of the twentieth century, had ONE flub in his massive GRAVITY'S RAINBOW, as far as I can tell:
At the end of WWII, in Germany, the book's protagonist had to dodge a silver Porsche as he attempted to cross the Autobahn.
