+1 for the S&W .38.
I would skip the .357. I shot the scandium frame .357 recently. It was not pleasant. Unless you have a
very tight grip on the gun, it bucks up, and the trigger guard wacks your finger pretty hard. On the upside, you only have to fire it once. Anyone not dead after that first shot is running in the other direction. The fireball and concussion are pretty impressive.
