I asked them to send me a copy of the ticket. They did. Its' legit so I guess I have to pay. I have a summer place in the US and a driving suspension would be a major obstacle.

I did call the Superintendent of MV here in BC to find out what, if any, agreements exist between BC and the US. I'll post results when they get back to me.
