Besides the bling factor, can someone explain to me why he is using twin turbos?
I know the newer turbo'd gas Jetta & golf used a version of the Ko3, but I think it's a bit different.

I have no idea how he would benefit from using two identical turbos in parallel. I've seen setups with compound turbos, where a smaller turbo is "feeding" a larger one.

Here's a compound setup on a 1.9 vw diesel engine. It uses a Garret T3 and a Holsett hy35:

Compounding is the only way he can spin that monstrous Holsett... he got 37 PSI before he bent the crank. He's just rebuilt it, with a gridle along the main bearings to keep the block from twisting.
