Lived there for ~7yrs w/ the 911 and motorcycle.
Don't know about durham, but the north fork/lusters gate out to Ironto (@ I81) can be religious (harding -> R on cawtaba valley -> L on northfork) Used to drive it every day to/from work.
Cawtaba valley all the way to Roa.
Prices fork out to radford (The radford half past 144 is the better one - will wear your arms out on a bike.)
Rt 8 out to the parkway though cristiansburg & floyd (this might be your best bet for heading south)
If your're in Salem look up 12-oclock knob. I used to be able to pass a car going the other way (about 1/2 way), make it to the end, turn around, and catch them before they made it back to salem. Was *GOOD* stress relief many lunch hours.
In a nutshell: since you're in the heart of the blue ridge mountains *ANY* rural road thats looks twisty on mapquest will be a blast.
Just be aware, there is some loose gravel in most areas and stay in your lane (many blind turns).
Best,
SMD
