I think it is a bit more than just tire kickers. Porsche buyers typically fall into two categories: the experienced and not. Unfortunately, the gap between the two is tremendous in terms of behavior and expectations.

The experienced buyer knows what the car is, what it's worth, and what to look for.

The inexperienced buyer asks his/her buddies, reads books, and in general comes armed with "knowledge" they don't know what to do with.

I bought all of my Porsches without PPIs after my first one. I know what I am dealing with having done it before.

SCs and Carreras are tough because like you said, these are old cars that are made more valueable with work. First time buyers see work as bad for whatever reason. They need to learn that they aren't all "collectables."

I tried selling my 81SC, priced for quick sale at $11k. No takers because everyone thought it was junk because of the price. This was not the case, I just had a new one coming. I bet if I asked $12k, people would complain it was overpriced.

I was so turned off by the whole experience that I too just kept my car. I decorates the street now and I would rather have it to that versus deal with the type of people who came to look at it.
