I've seen the same sort of weird things happen on laptops. Try fiddling with your power settings, it sounds like it may have shut down the hard drive or been in the middle of trying to do some powersave thing. Sometimes when that gets interrupted it'll freak out.

Try checking for driver/BIOS updates, that usually clears up power management issues if that's what it ends up being.
