I remember sitting in the Duesseldorf airport bar, waiting for a flight around 1989 and watching CNN's footage of that UAL crash landing in Sioux City, IA. That's just what you want to see before boarding a transatlantic flight.

And then I remember getting to friends' house in Cologne, flipping on the tube and seeing the news about the shoe bomber, a few hours after I had landed at Frankfurt. Man, did I get checked out a few times before that return flight.
