In the 356 world, this is known as an outlaw. Its your car, do it if you want, but try not to make it un-doable. Store the original engine, etc. if possible.
Although, there are many more 944/951 in the world than there ever were 356s, but just in case the 944 gets really popular 20 years down the road....
