Porsche designed a horizontally opposed diesel for VW in 51, and it was used in a couple beetle test "mules".
Apparently, it was slow. Hard to believe.
Interstingly, it's rumored that Ferdinand had one of these engines in a 356 for a while.
Not turbocharged though, so I guess Subabru is right.
