$6.5k is toward the high end of the spectrum, but it's not beyond reason. If the paint looks great, if the interior looks great, and if your friend has a stack of receipts from the mechanic showing a recent timing belt service (recent = less than 10k miles?, less than 1 year old), he could get the asking price. Also needs to have working AC, no oil leaks or interior water leaks, etc etc...

Basically, if the car looks great, drives great, needs nothing, and he can prove it, it's worth about what he's asking. Otherwise, average to good cars do indeed go for $4.5 - $5k.
