Probably be cheaper in the long run, but then I am truthfully no expert as to p-car restoration work. But lots of others here have given what sounds to be solid advice. Why don't you get dad and grandmother together and part of that $12k on making the SC into your dream car. And for the record, I think your idea of the lilac and the yellow would actually look pretty cool if done with the right yellow. You might try to talk someone into helping you out with a little photoshop work. Spend the rest of the $12k on finding someone to teach you how to drive a stick effectively!
