For my wife, appearance of the area will definitely impact her comfort level. A place could be perfectly fine, but I guess you tend to feel less secure when you're unfamiliar with an area that might appear less than "inviting", for lack of a better term.
Not sure about you and your wife's accommodation threshold, but a guy I know owns the Best Western in Chinatown; about 10 min. from the stadium. If you like Chinese cuisine, that's one option. I've never stayed there, but tell him I sent you. The downtown hotels are fairly pricey. Otherwise, follow Todd's (Nostatic) suggestion about Pasadena (1/2 hr. drive north). Lot's of places there.

Hotels around the Burbank airport are decent but typical of airport hotels - isolated with nothing around except sounds of jet engines overhead.
