You are absolutely correct. It happens regardless of political party: both sides do it.
It's like how Michael Ovitz drove Disney into the ground and got paid over $100 million for 17 months of dismal performance. I can do at least as bad a job as him, where's my $100 million.
The fact is, in national politics, the system has been designed to protect those people who make it into the elite club. And it goes all the way down to things like the Illinois law that prevents one from voting in primaries if they signed a petition for a third-party candidate.
