Actually yes, there is a performance aspect that can be achieved with a 3.0 Euro Carrera that can't be done with an SC.
The 76/77' Euro Carrera has a unique engine case, that's also shared with 3.0 Turbos, that allows you to use the 66mm crank shaft that was used in the small displacement 2.0 to 2.2L motors. The 66mm crank won't fit the SC/Carrera case.
If you want to build a 2.8 to 3.0 short stroke race motor (66mm) this is the case you want. You can build a motor that will rev reliably up to 8000 RPM.
66mm stroke x 95mm P+C = 2.8L
66mm stroke x 98mm P+C = 3.0L
To me this makes the 3.0 Carrera a lot more attractive than an SC.
You can build a short stroke motor with an SC case but you'll have to hunt down a crankshaft from a 959 or 962 race motor to do it.
