Naylor, When I replaced my 1987 924S headgasket 12 Feb 07, I had the same deposits by the head studs. I did the same and cleaned the groves out. My surprise came when I vaccumed out the antifreeze paths around the cyl. The far rear cyl antifreeze grove had a small mixture of deposits that looked like ground metal and tar about a sixteenth of an inch deep. All other areas were clean.

Raceware produces a high end stud kit (about $260) for your car with a product code of RTE1011. 100 year guarantee and 24% STRONGER than OEM and are designed re-usable. Will not stretch. My only question is do you still use the same torque sequence or give it an extra nudge?

Good luck,
