The 911's that have been hurt in resale values are the 2.7 cars and the 964's. Those cars had large flaws right from the factory. The 993 was initially very well accepted and enjoyed a really good reputation as a reliable 911. Recently, the 993 has been hit with a bit more depreciation and the reliability issue is being tested due to the CEL issues and such.

But, I still feel the 993 will continue it's overall good reputation as a solid 911. Therefore, I think the 993 will always bring more than the 3.2 Carreras because, plain and simple, they are newer and have much more performance. I don't think the 3.2's will surpass 993's in the near future unlike how a nice, low mileage 3.2 may be priced higher than an average to good condition early 964.

I'd compare the price difference between a 1983 911SC Cabrio with a late '80's 3.2 Coupe and maybe apply that to your scenario of pricing out your '89 against this 993.
