It was revenge against her husband for pointing out the falsehoods used to excuse the attack on Iraq. There was a special bonus associated with the fact that her area of focus was WMDs in Iran.
A possible interpretation is that Iran was on the 'war roadmap' of the administration, and they didn't want any CIA people contradicting (as they did with Iraq) whatever claims they were planning to make about Iran being a threat. Blowing the cover of Plame's 'employer,' Brewster-Jennings may have cost some people their lives, but would send a clear message...
