If it's a price point issue, you can do well at that level (or slightly above) with some time on gunbroker.com or gunsamerica.com.
If it's a price point issue AND you need to buy new, it's still worth looking at the aforementioned sites, but we're getting into what you want a .45 1911 for.
Target shooting/competition? I can't recommend the Taurus 1911 for that, over some of its competition.
Personal protection... it's fine.
Making noise on the back 40 every so often. Great!
I think Taurus' build quality has improved over the years, but like just about everything else, I wouldn't buy new unless I really had to.
