When was the last time the legislative or executive branch of the government did anything to protect individual rights. Our government did not grant any rights to citizens of this country. The Founders recognized rights which they believed already existed and were granted by our Creator. The Declaration of Independence outlines the belief and The Constitution details the "protection of", not the "granting of" our rights. There is a huge difference.
I'm sure that an uprising of working class people feeling oppressed sounded like a great idea at the time. Then they granted the government the power to take care of everyone "equally" LOL. Then their saviors established a totalitarian regime that brutally oppressed, murdered and tortured millions of people. This is what leads to the Stalins and Hitlers of the world and the disappearance of individual freedom.
Oh yeah, that "government will take care of everything" crap works really well!
