i have one of those old beater plastic bodied trouble lights that used incandescents. was blowing those out all the time. got some replacement fluorescents for it and have broken only one bulb in two years.
dropped a tire on it, so any bulb would have failed. the plastic sprung back into a normal shape, still a little warped but fine for me.

+1. I discovered the same. Old fixtures and the new CFL's work great. With the cage around the lamp, it's hard to break, but not impossible.
