To get back to why cabs are up for sale. My theory and this is only a WAG is that cabs grab the impluse buyer who are drawn to the ultimate look in sports cars. (Those on this board excluded) I think many times these are not hard core porsche buyers. The guys really into the cars buy a coupe give it a name tuck a pillow under it a night and it stays in the family. The inpulse buyer of the cab gets tired of it and puts it back on the market.
Now I was in the impluse buyer catagory. Loved the look of the cab then discovered that to really be what I considered a porsche it needed a few mods. Now I have become slightly attached to the car so instead of getting a coupe I push my poor little cab with stiffer springs, CAT removal, sport muffler, cam changes, monoballs, adjustabe shocks etc. Mostly CRAP. I can now tuck a pillow under it since I fixed the leaks but those nice comfortable adjustable seats have been replaced by a single aluminum race seat.
I love running the cab at both auto-x and the track. At the track it is perhaps a bit more risky with no top but I don't do wheel to wheel. I did put in roll bar. There is just something about running with no top. You can see better, you can hear the engine, you can smell the clutch of the guy you are getting ready to pass. And best of all you don't cook sitting in the car.
Do the cabs cost more - probably in general they do. There were far less cabs imported and again in my opinion are the look of what I expect a sports car to be. I don't think they are $5000 higher. I would think that alot of cabs were not daily drivers so perhaps are in better shape. Perhaps not. In any case don't think that cabs are inferior cars. Unless you are a totally dedicated tracker then you will never get to the limit of the cab performance which most of those above will tell you pretty high. So buy a cab put some CRAP on it and have fun.
