Mrs. Edwards broke a rib. On X-ray it was found that the bone was weakened by tumor. They also found another tumor growth in another rib. Breast cancer that has spread to bone is considered incurable. For every visible sign of tumor growth in her ribs, there are probably countless microscopic tumor nests growing in her spine, brain and lungs. Cancer specialists would quote her chances of surviving 5 years as less than 5%. Because her cancer reoccured so quickly after chemo and radiation (3 years) it is reasonable to assume that her cancer is a particularly aggressive one.
With good therapy the tumor growth may be slowed a bit, but in all likelihood Mrs. Edwards is dying.
