We had a similar junk yard here in the Charleston, SC area. It was all grown up, but full of 1950s and 1960s cars. The old man who owned it died and the heirs just scrapped everything to sell the property quickly.

The property was worth a whole lot more than the cars, but they threw away literally tens of thousands of dollars worth of cars/parts. They had a garage on the property and I saw a dumpster filled with boxed (new?) parts pulled out from the garage.

It made me sick to see such waste, but I simply didn't have the time or money to take any action. I talked to the real estate agent involved in the sale and tried to get him to tell the owners they were throwing away money. I talked to the operator of the lift loading the cars for their trip to the scrap yard and he said he was trying to tell his boss there was more than scrap value to some of the stuff, but nobody wanted to think a little "longer-term" -- it was all just a case of "turn it into cash the quickest way possible," which was to scrap it.
