Well, in the original story, Starbuck gets lost on a planet. and sends the infant of a woman (who was also on the planet) off the planet to be found by the Galactica.
The infant turns out to be Dr Z. (pre-teen Genius) that leads them to EArth.
This time around its been stated over and over, its starbucks desitny to lead to earth.
Since Most broadcasts world wide have english content, Its a no brainer that all alien races will know english when the come to visit (conquer).
