I read a review somewhere and the problems far more outweigh the benefits of using the Xbox as a routine player.

Here is one I found:

CNET editors' review
Very good
7.5
out of 10The good: The Xbox 360 HD DVD player is less than half of the price of today's stand-alone HD DVD players and includes the Xbox 360 Universal remote. We also appreciated that the player's disc-load times were half those of Toshiba's current HD DVD players, and its two rear USB slots that let you connect USB peripherals.

The bad: Since the Xbox 360 currently doesn't offer HDMI connectivity, there's no way to output your HD DVDs via HDMI for optimal video and audio quality. Currently, there's no 1080p output via component video.

The bottom line: While it doesn't offer HDMI connectivity, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player matches up well against stand-alone HD DVD players, and it's a relative bargain at $200.

No 1080p to me is a problem if that is the ultimate goal you should be after.

Give it a year or two and all the dvd's will be this format and you won't be stuck with a hugely overpriced obsolete dvd player. I picked up a 1080p converting player on my Sony SXRD and the quality is so good I really can't see it getting much sharper. I think they are going for $80?
