A picture would help, but if the "stainless steel ring" you describe is what I think it is, it provides the lip that is larger than the hole in the counter-top. The sink will drop out from below if you remove the screws and clips; the "ring" will be removed from the top. The clips force the sink up to the "ring" -- loosening the clips allow the sink to drop down.
