You must put the trim in before you reinstall the windshield, assuming you have all-ready put the windshield in the car then you should still be able to remove the windshield without damaging the rubber seal.

Then carefully insert the trim into the rubber while the rubber seal is on the windshield.

Then install the whole set up into the car.

If this is not the case then your trim may be bent, and from researching this topic, that is bad.

You could order a later model seal that does not require the trim. or you could shove some thick TV cable wire in there.
