Have seen this before and have a cure. I go to mapquest (or use my MS streets and trips here at home) and run the route on the computer. Make a copy of it.
Then go and rent the truck or car and do the trip. Checkout and if the total mileage is not within 5% of what the computer said it would be I ask for their manager. Once had to threaten to take this to the local television station but they all have finally bought off on the computerized mileage.
Their odometers are all a bit slanted in their direction so that they make more money. Bastards...
