Now, I am all in favor of making cars more efficient. As a matter of fact, when it comes to things like nutrition, health, etc., I am far closer to "new age" than most would admit. But something about the Tesla bothers me, and I think it centers around this question:
How does it sound?
I can't imagine this car, or any car that lacks an internal combustion engine, sounding that good... and isn't that a pretty sizeable portion of the enjoyment we get out of cars? When I bought my 951, one of my first thoughts was "yeah, it's basically a rocketship with wheels - but it's a bit too quiet, isn't it?" - and even the 951, as quiet as it is, sounds pretty good.
Granted, I haven't driven the Tesla, so I really can't pass judgement. But to me, an environmentally-minded liberal, a sports car that lacks an internal combustion engine also lacks a soul. No V8-rumble, no Porsche mechanical clatter, no Ferrari howl.
