The cowbell skit was great, but not because of ferrell.
Like most modern SNL veterans, his comedy is contrived, forced, and lacked the subtle smartass attitude and sense of timing that made the originals funny.
Taledega nights was a perfect example What a POS. I forced myself to watch ithe whole thing, thinking that it has to get better eventually. It didn't. Sure there was some funny stuff, but taking what should have been a 3 second funny liitle quip and trying to stretch it out for 3 minutes was painfull. I kept saying to myself, "OK I got it, move on. It's not funny anymore."
They should all be forced to watch monty python every single day. they they will figure out that subtle is funny and sophisticated at the same time.
