Ironically, at the end of the movie, he was most concerned with the tail leading them to his deal, but he didn't care previously? Very inconsistent.
Little things like this ruin the movie for me.

I took this part to just be a symptom of Jack's growing dementia. He was getting so addicted to the money and the power, he couldn't stop himself, even though as he said, he didn't need it. He knew they were close but he just kept going because he could.
