My great grandfather bragged his entire life that he immigrated to the US from Sweden by working on a merchant vessel of some kind and jumping ship in New York harbor around 1900. The whole story became family lore and is repeated for every new generation. I have no way of knowing whether it is a true story or not; he was also reputedly quite a tall tale teller. But I feel a little uncomfortable having grown up with a story like that and criticising today's illegal immigrants.
