Not excusing their actions, but let's be realistic. If you were a very weathy person, bouncing at a high rate of speed through a third world country that didn't exist a decade ago in a six-figure car, and happened to run over some locals, would you:
a) feel confident in the local legal system to protect your rights and give you a expeditious and fair trial, or
b) realize that you were about to end up in a cross between Deliverence and Midnight Express and use whatever means you had at your disposal to get the hell back to civilization?
Being an honorable person assumes that there is a social system in place that supports that honor. When you're about to be (or think you're about to be) lynched, it's not honorable to loiter around with you thumb up your ass, it's just stupid.
