If price is a concern (Stihl's are great but you gotta pay up) and you have the ability to go with an electric one, I picked up a $90 pole saw at Menards (forgot the brand), but it does an exceptional job of trimming.
Also, for typical limited amount of trimming branches that the typical home owner does, not dealing with yet another internal combustion motor is a plus. The electric is a 'store it and forget it until you need it' type thing. Again, this info may or may not suit what you need to do with the pole saw.
I too agree that 12-14 feet is a huge reach and you really gotta have upper body strenth to cut large amounts of stuff. There is a ton of leverage at those longer lengths.
