Power Book G4 question

I have a Power Book G4 that is about 3+ years old and I would like to upgrade to Tiger 10.4 from 10.2.8 (Panther). Can someone tell me what capabilities my Power book must have in order to make this transition without encountering problems in the future. Is this worth doing? Will I lose all stored files on the computer. I currently have 256MB memory and 867 MHz processor and no firewire capability. No problems with Panther, just want the new system and the gadgets. Computer works fine and I see no reason to buy a new Power Book to the tune of 2 grand.

I'm not near an Apple store and want buy the upgrade over the internet but only if I can install w/o any problems. Apple tells me to bring the computer in and they will install for a small fee since I do not have service agreement, don't want to do this as have some confidential material on the computer. If I can do it myself, have no problem as long as it should work.

Any advice would be appreciated.
