Tim go with the Toshiba laptop. I just bought one (from Best Buy) 2 months ago after my SECOND HP laptop shot craps. It has a combined DVD/CD read/write drive, 2g ram, 160g hard drive, and wireless already installed. on sale it was $850 and even off sale it is less than $1K. If you want I can get you the model number or you can just go to Best Buy and it will probably be the one closest in price to $1K. $800-$1K right now seems to be the sweet spot for any laptop to get all the features you are looking for.
