As you are looking for a "pleasure" car, I would go with the Boxster (S, if possible). I like the 996s (more the 2 wheel drive rather than the 4) but I think the Boxster is more of a pure sports car, having no top, 2 seats, and being back wheel drive (as opposed to the C4 which is 4 wheel drive). Unless you intend to race your new purchase, I think the Boxster will provide you with a greater sense of occasion and just be more enjoyable to drive - the 996 being a fast car with a bit less character, better suited to being a daily driver, which you are probably not looking for.
